Government House,

Hongkong, 21st December, 1906.

I have the honour to ask for a ruling from Your Lordship as to how the salary of the Attorney General should be calculated for the purpose of paying an officer acting in the post who in his substantive post receives a dollar salary.

2. The point has arisen in the case of Mr. H. H. J. Gompertz whose substantive post is that of Assistant Colonial Secretary and who did not accept a sterling salary on the institution of the scheme of Sterling Salaries.

3. At the time of the institution of that scheme the salary of the Attorney General was the same as that of the Puisne Judge, viz: $8,400 per annum at 3/- to the dollar. But on the appointment of Sir Henry Berkeley to be Attorney General his salary was fixed at £1,500; and
