years-pointing to the fact that any technical breach of the conditions of lease has been waived by the Government, and advantage taken of it for purposes of revenue—as has been done in fact in the case of a very large number of the farm leases.* We request therefore that these buildings may be allowed to remain: except such as are on the area proposed to be resumed; for which compensation should be paid.

5. Our clients will, when an agreement has been come to, execute such deeds as may be necessary to carry it into effect.

6. Our clients do not claim any rights beyond those that are conceded to every resident in a British Colony; the right namely to be treated with equal justice—in this particular case the right to be treated no less fairly than other owners of Farm Lots.

7. A large number of small structures—matsheds &c. used in great part by persons occupied in the industry of pig-rearing have been removed in accordance with your request, and we shall feel obliged if you will let us know if this has been done to your satisfaction.

Some of these structures have been erected we believe in past times without permits being granted; but upon these buildings also—as we are informed—taxes have been paid to the Government: their illegality therefore cannot be very glaring. Our client however has hastened to carry out your wishes in this matter.

Messrs. DENISON RAM & GIBBS.

W. CHATHAM,

Director of Public Works.

A large number of the Farm Lots have been built on without any protest on the part of the Government. Nearly all the houses that were built on the island in the out-districts and on the higher levels: when the first experiments were made in the direction of country or suburban houses; were built on Farm Lots, as for instance:—

Hon. Mr. Bellos, The Eyre... F. L. No. 57.

The Haystack.... F. L. Nos. 60 & 61.

The Mount Austin Arms Hotel... F. L. No. 54.

The Teak Hotel........ Treverbyn .........F. L. No. 3,

.................F. L. No. 62.

The Admiralty Bungalow.........F. L. No. 53.

Mr. Granville Sharp, Homestead......... F. L. No. 59. Myrth Bank.....F. L. No. 58.

Sir E. J. Ackroyd's Ellaudonau F. L. No. 64. Mr. A. F. McEwens Bungalow...F. L. No. 67,

Most of these lots were subsequently converted into Building Lots.
