duty on Blake Pier, I was standing in the verandah & typhoon was

very strong then. I saw one Chinaman blown away into the water on the

eastern side of the Blake Pier. I ran after him but the wind struck

me against the lamp post. I got hold of the post firmly & took off

my turban from my head & tied one part of it with the post & tried

to save the man from drowning by means of catching my turban. Upon

this a European gentleman came up & he caught hold of my turban &

jumped into the water. I caught hold the other side of the turban

& pulled them both ashore. When I got near the steps my turban got

broken & I was very near to go into the water, but luckily I saw a

hole in a step & put my hand in supporting myself, with the other

hand I caught hold the European gentleman by his tunic, he was then

holding the Chinaman. Thus the drowning man was saved.
