Ask him whether before this demand he alleges Mr Ward made, he had been fined?

A. Yes, because I would not go. My foot was paining. I told the foreman to go and see him, and then as I was fined much, it was said to me "You must certainly go and see him”.

Have you always carried out the conditions of your contract properly?

A. I did not see anything proper or improper.

Have I never had on several occasions to report you?

A. A number of times you reported me.

Well then, if I had reported you, you must not have been carrying out the conditions of your contract, you should do.

The Chairman:-

Ward:-

Well, I am not there every day looking at what is being done. It is because I was called so much up to the Sanitary Board that I went to see you. If the work is not right, you ought to tell my foreman. Have you any more questions to put, Mr Ward? You know very well that as regards coming to my house, you are telling a deliberate lie. What is your idea for coming up here, and telling a deliberate lie? You volunteered to come up here and give evidence, what is your idea for doing so?

A. When I spoke about you then, would I single you out and not speak about anybody else?

You have never paid me any money?

A. No.

Well then, you have volunteered to come up here, and give this evidence against me. Why do you do so? As to my coming up to do it, I have got a reason for it. People told me to come up and give evidence against you. I didn't want to.
