I have the honour to acknowledge your letter of the 11th instant enquiring whether anything further has transpired with regard to the alleged proposal to close the Mint here.
I have had some difficulty in obtaining information on the subject owing to changes among the officials and the death of Mr. Wyon, the only foreign employee in the Mint. I have, however, now ascertained that the Mint still continues to manufacture some $5,000 worth of subsidiary coinage per diem. I am informed that an Imperial Commissioner left Peking about a month ago to visit the Provincial Capitals with a view to introducing a uniform standard throughout China, and is expected shortly in Canton.
I think that it would be useless at the present juncture to make any further representations to Viceroy Ts'en, but that on the arrival of his successor
