I am directed to inform you that at a Meeting of the Committee of this Chamber held this afternoon reference was made to the death of the late Harbour Master, the Honourable Captain Lionel Barnes-Lawrence, R.N., and the following resolution was carried:-

RESOLUTION.

The Committee of the Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce desire to place on record their deep regret at the untimely death of the Harbour Master, Captain Lionel Barnes-Lawrence, R.N., brought about through overwork and exposure during the typhoon of the 18th ultimo.

During his tenure of office Captain Barnes-Lawrence invariably showed the greatest courtesy and consideration to all with whom he was brought into contact. While carrying out the duties of his office with ability and justice he did all in his power to facilitate the work of the Shipping Community and advance their interests.

The Committee therefore in passing this resolution wish to convey to His Excellency the Governor their sense of the loss sustained by the Service and the Colony through the death of Captain Barnes-Lawrence, and to Mrs. Barnes-Lawrence and her daughters their most respectful and sincere sympathy in the great misfortune which has befallen them.
