"Monteagle", to be refloated. On the 23rd, another typhoon passed South of the Colony but its centre was over 300 miles away and the bad weather it produced at Hongkong had no further ill results. Bad weather due to a typhoon, moving Westward from the East of Luzon was prophesied on the 27th September, and this forecast was realised on the 28th and 29th when the typhoon passed within 300 miles from South-East to West of the Colony, the typhoon gun being fired at 5 p.m. on the 28th. In spite of the full notice given, considerable damage was done but on this occasion it was more on the shore than on the sea. A retaining wall behind a private house on the upper levels of Victoria failed, brought down some coolie quarters, and entombed 3 men who were killed. 4 houses partially collapsed in Victoria City, 26 collapsed wholly or in part or required to be shored up in various parts of Kowloon and 5 were destroyed on Cheung Chow Island. 3 junks are reported to have sunk and from one of them, a very large one, 17 persons
