to the Commander-in-Chief of the United States Fleet in

the Far East expressing my appreciation of this assistance.

A detachment of the Royal Garrison

Artillery stationed at Stonecutters' Island in co-operation

with a party of Bluejackets from His Majesty's Ship "Flora"

rendered valuable services in saving lives from the German

Steamship "Apenrade" which stranded off the Island, a

Petty Officer of the "Flora" with several Bluejackets and

Gunners Brotherton, Canter, and Donohue swimming out to the

wrecked vessel with a line and bringing people to the

shore. I wrote to the Officer Commanding Troops who had

reported the circumstances to me, expressing my appreciation of those services and the letter was published in

General Staff Orders.

of the Royal West Kent Regiment on the 19th September

and detachments from that Regiment and from other
