to me justified by a visit of inspection which I made to the Territories on the 16th. ultimo may in spite of the heavy September rains be realised in parts which were not reached by the abnormally high water.

36. The loss of life among Europeans, as reported by the Harbour Master and the Captain Superintendent of Police was as follows, with the sad addition of the name of the Harbour Master himself:-

(1). Dr. John Charles Hoare, since 1898 Bishop of Victoria, drowned while on diocesan inspection by the capsizing of the house-boat "Pioneer" between The Brothers and Castle Peak Bay.

(2). Captain Lionel Aubrey Walter Barnes-Lawrence, R.N., late Harbour Master of Hongkong, since January, 1904, succumbed on October 2nd. to illness brought on by exposure on September 18th. and subsequent overwork.

(3-6). Mr. W. F. Donaldson of Messrs. Butterfield and Swire, Mrs. Donaldson and 2 children washed off the steam-launch "Kong Nam".

(7). Captain A. N. Patrick, Master of the S. S. "Albatross", sunk near the Nine Pins outside the Futaumun Pass.
