reliable estimate of the value of private property and cargo lost in sunken ships, lighters and cargo-boats or damaged in collapsed Godowns and houses or by the water that swept over the sea-walls and into the lower floors of stores. $4,000,000 seems from sums I have heard mentioned to be an outside figure and only a small part of this loss will fall on the Colony, most of the goods having been insured or re-insured in companies outside of it.

Nearly every Government Building suffered more or less, but with the exception of Sham Shui Po Police Station, to the North-West of the Kowloon Peninsula, which will practically have to be rebuilt, the damages reported are not serious. In Victoria, a large part of the lead roof covering of Queen's College was carried away and a portion of the roof of one of the blocks of the Government Civil Hospital was stripped of its tiles.
