East and within 300 miles of the Colony, was hoisted. By 8.23 the strength of the wind had increased to 7 and the barometer fallen to 29.61. At 8.40 the typhoon gun, to show that a strong gale was expected to blow, was fired. By 9.23 the wind had increased to force 11 and the barometer fallen to 29.23. At 9.43 the barometer touched its lowest point at 29, the wind backing to West and about 10 a.m. to South-West. In some of the squalls full typhoon force was reached. At 10.23 the wind was still blowing with force 11 but from South-South-West and the barometer had risen to 29.18. An hour later it had reached 29.61 and the wind had moderated to force 8. By 12.23 p.m. the wind force had sunk to 5 and the barometer risen again to 29.70.
The centre of the storm which at 8 a.m. must have been in 22 degrees 16 minutes North and 115 degrees 28 minutes East passed away across the Shatin Gap, about 6 miles North of the Observatory at Kowloon, and the disturbance appears to have broken up against the Tai Mo Shan block of hills in the New Territories. Neither Canton nor Macao felt its effects, the wind recorded at both places at 10 a.m. being from the North and of force 1.
