undone. The social position of the Chief Justice in the Colony is an
important one,
and I do all in my power to maintain it; but 1 submit
that the Colony should provide me with the means of performing my
social duties adequately.

I have hesitated to ask for a Secretary of the
same position as the Judge's Clerks in Mauritius, as i believe that a
personal clerk at a lower salary and of a status similar to that of
Earrister's clerks in sngland, would, if carefully selected at home
serve the purpose as well. I may all that there is a spare room adjoin-
-ing rine, which with a very small outlay would serve the purpose of
clerk's room.
