My Lord,
Referring to Mr. Lyttelton's Confidential
despatch of the 18th. July, 1905, approving my proposal
that the remuneration to the Crown Solicitor should be
fixed from the 1st. January, 1906, at £1,000 a year, inclu-
sive of the cost of staff and of all other expenses inci-
dental to his office, I have the honour to transmit a copy
of a letter received from Mr. F. B. L. Bowley pointing out
that by reason of the rise in exchange the increase granted
to him has proved illusory and asking that if during the
year 1907 exchange should exceed 2/- his remuneration
should be paid at a maximum rate of 2/-.
2.
I have seen Mr. Bowley who has expressed his
concurrence in what I consider would be a more suitable
arrangement namely to fix his salary definitely at $10,000

in place of £1,000. As he is permanently located in the
Colony and as his appointment under this Government is a
temporary
