Medical Officer.

The question of Dr. Hunter's agreement, which expires
on February 27th. of next year, should come up soon for considera-
tion.
He was appointed for a period of five years "to inves- tigate the causes and propagation of tropical diseases, with
special reference to plague".
It is doubtful whether the Bacteriologist should be on
the permanent establishment at all. With a permanent Assistant Bacteriologist to carry on the routine duties at the Mortuary and in connection with clinical pathology, it is probable that the Colony would reap the greatest benefit from their expenditure by appointing from time to time an expert to investigate some par- ticular subject just as Dr. Bunter was appointed to make special
investigations into Plague.
