Plague was responsible for 287
the smallest number hitherto recorded since the
original outbreak in 1894 except for the two years 1895 and
1897. This comparative immunity cannot, it is feared, be
ascribed to the result of Sanitary precautions, as a
recrudescence of the epidemic in the present year has al
-ready been attended by over 500 deaths and promises to
equal in intensity the outbreak of 1903 in which there
were 1,251 fatal cases.
There were 287 deaths from
Malarial Fever in 1905 compared with 301 in 1904 and 555
in 1900. It is satisfactory to note that the mortality
from this cause continues steadily to decline.
There was a severe visitation of
Beri-Beri during the year accounting for 676 deaths in the
Chinese Community. An investigation carried out by Drs.
Koch and Hunter into the cause and prevention of this
disease has produced only negative results.
