been ascertained through enquiry that the sugar trade
remained normal throughout 1905.
4.
The number of Steam-launches en-
-ployed in the harbour increased from 262 to 276 during
the year.
5.
The Immigration and Emigration
figures are obtained in the same manner as the trade
statistics and must be regarded as approximate only.
Compared with 1904 the number of emigrants leaving and
returning to the Colony decreased by some 12,000 and 9,000
persons respectively.
6.
The increase in the number of
cases tried in the Marine Magistrate's Court from 56 cases
61
with 170 defendants in 1904 to 75 cases with 338 defendants
in 1905 is largely due to men charged with impeding the
progress of the voyage of their ships by refusing to
proceed to sea at the time the Russian Baltic Fleet was in
being. Greater rigour in the enforcement of the Harbour
Master's orders also added to the number of cases.
I have the honour to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient,
humble servant,
