For the present it is proposed that the Accountant should
be paid on the lower of the above scales and that the
Senior Clerk should remain outside the scheme,

I annex a table showing the
effect of the proposed alterations on the Estimates for
1907. If these were calculated on the same basis of 1 s.
8 d. to the dollar as the Estimates for the current year
they would show an increase of $1,734. As however they
will be made out on a 2 shilling basis there will be a
decrease of $326. There will of course be an increase on
the amounts that will actually have been paid to the
officers this year.

Your Lordship's authority to offer the Sterling salaries
I have proposed in paragraphs 2, 3, and 6 above to Messrs.
Reed, Dixon, and Kaye and, if they accept, to make pro-
-vision for these salaries as well as for those proposed
in paragraph 5 for Messrs. Martin and Savage in the
Estimates for 1907.
