I have the honour to inform Your
Lordship that on November 16th., 1900, the Basel Mission
at Hongkong offered this Government the copyright of the
Reverend J. G. Lorcher's "Map of the Province of Canton",
which, with the assistance of a grant-in-aid from the Hong-
-kong Government, had been published in Switzerland in
1879. The conditions proposed were that 50 copies of a new
and of any further edition of the map should be given free
of cost to the Mission in Hongkong, and that Mr. Lörcher's
services for the preparation of a new edition should be
remunerated according to the time he might spend on it.
The plates of the original map had been destroyed.
2.
The question of the revision of
the map was referred to the Military Authorities and
Colonel L. F. Brown, Commanding Royal Engineer, reported
that
