Referring to Your Lordship's
Despatch No. 30 of the 7th. ultimo, forwarding correspond-
-ence regarding the nationality of Mr. Thomas Benning, I
have the honour to inform Your Lordship that this gentleman
is stated to be the illegitimate son of a Mr. A. H. Benning
an American subject, and a Chinese woman.

It is believed that he was born at
