In continuation of my Confidential

Despatch of the 7th. instant on the subject of the seizure

by the Viceroy of the Two Kwang of certain coal mortgaged

to the National Bank of China, Limited, I have the honour

to inform Your Lordship that on the 11th. instant, I receiv.

-ed a private letter from Mr. Scott at Canton containing

the following passage:-

*About the coal mortgage, the Viceroy also *sent a message through his Secretary. It was to "the effect that if Fung and Kwang (Fung's "Accountant) could give any satisfactory explana- "-tion of the discrepancy in the accounts as *found in the Books seized and if Fung would pay "over the balance owing by him to Chou Tung "Shang's estate, there will be no difficulty in "effecting a settlement of the Bank's claim and "in releasing the coal".
