Sir,

I have the honour to apply for an immediate increase of salary of £70 per annum on the following grounds,, and I beg to request that you will be good enough to lay my application before His Excellency the Governor for his consideration, viz:-

That I joined the Education Department in April, 1902,

as Senior Master and Supervisor of all the Anglo-Chinese Dis-

trict Schools in the Colony; and was appointed deadmaster of the Rantsel District School in January, 1908.

That do to the end of 1905, my salary was $200 per

That at the beginning of 1904, I joined the sterling Scheme. As the rate of exchange was then below 1s.33. per 3, my

salary was consequently fixed at £200 oer annum, rising to £250

by triennial increments of £25.

That since joining the sterling scheme, the rate of

exchange has greatly risen, with the result that instead of

receiving $200 per month as before, my average monthly salary for

the past two years has been only $175 or thereabouts,

That during the past few years, the cost of living

in Hongkong has been increased by almost 50%

That when I joined the service, I did not have any

children, whereas I have now a family of two, which must necessari ly increase my household expenses.

That my wife being an English lady, and myself having

been brought up on Western habits, the cost of our living must

necessarily be equal to that of any average European family in the

Colony.
