Enclosure 1.

translation of a letter from the Mexican Monetary Commission to our San Francisco Office on the subject of coining dollars for purpose of export.

Mexico, January 5, 1906.

Our mutual friends Messrs. bugo Sherer, Jr. & Co.,

have informed us of your desire to receive some information re- -garding the disposition of the Mexican Government concerning the

coinage of "pasos" for exportation, and according to the latest

Monetary Laws everything pertaining to the same has been assigned

to this Commission (Committee), so we daer it best to communicate

direct with you in the matter.

The first question to be decided was relative to the

uniform style of the coin to be adopted, and as for our coinion

on the subject, it is as follows:-

1st.

To adopt the coinage of 1899.

2nd.

3rd.

On the obverse, that is the "Eagle" side, to substitute the words "Hepublica Mexicana" by the words "Estados Unidos Mexicanos"

On the reverse side to have on the liberty-cap either the word "Exportacion" instead of the word "Libertad", or else after the mint sign () to substitute the initials "A.M.", which correspond to the name of the party who was head assayer at the time at the mint, by the word "Exportacion".

Your opinion in the watter will be of great weight

in our final decision, on account of your experience in the trade

of Mexican "pescs" with the Orient. Our object is to retain as

pear as possible the resemblance of the "pesos" of the new coinsge

with those of the old one, but we must endeavour to avoid any

possibility of confusion and also avoid the possibility of mixing
