In the 3rd. paragraph of my Des-

-patch No. 46 dated 28th. February last, dealing with the

leave-pay to Mr. A. W. Grant on account of the Assistant

Mastership of the Police School, I have the honour to

state that I proposed to bring under Your Lordship's

consideration the question of the tenure of appointments

in that school.

The Police School first appeared

in the Estimates for 1873 as an item of $2,400 under the

head of "Allowances" and so remained till 1891 when the

same item was entered under "Other Charges". The amounts

of the salaries of Master in charge and Assistant Master,

paid out of this open Vote, were all along $600 and $480

respectively. In 1898 these salaries were held to be

pensionable and the Executive Council approved of Exchange

Compensation being added to them at the rate of 3 shillings
