Paraphrase of Cypher Telegram No. 10.
Sir Ernest Satow to Consul-General Scott.
240
Feking, 18th. February, 1905.
In reply to your Telegram No. 5 with reference to the coal
seizure, I beg to inform you that I received last night a note
from Aai hu Fu, forwarding to me a telegram from the viceroy in
which His Excellency alleged that in July, 1905, Chou Fung Sang
had $125,000 in the concern. The viceroy stated that an examina-
-tion of the account books seized at the same time as the co41,
would prove this, and claimed that rung's statement that the
partnership was dissolved in 1904 is refuted by this evidence.
i should be glad to know whether you have examined these
account books, and also how ung explains these entries if they
exist as alleged.
As regards the registration of the Bank's Mortgage in
Weoruary, 1995, tell the viceroy that there is no objection to his
sending a Secretary to satisfy himself on this point.
Satas.
