Hongkong. sven supposing the coal to belong to Chou and not to

Kung, as the viceroy alleges, the bank, I submit, is entitled to

have the Mortgage recognised; for there is no Chinese law or rule

whereby any Mortgage of chatteis or effects, such as this, has to

20 through any formality or registration before the Chinese

Authorities. In Chinese law, it is only the Mortgage of land and

houses which requires registration; all other dealings are con-

-sidered ordinary commercial transactions between the parties

concerned.
