We have the honour to acknowledge receipt of

your favour dated 27th, ultima, enclosing copies of a despatch

from His Britannic Majesty's Consul-General in Canton dated 24to.

ultimo, and from the Viceroy of Canton dated 2nd, ultimo, and we

have since received from you a copy of the Viceroy's despatch

When the National Bank of China advanced the

Weng Hua Chun to be the sole owner of the coal and the Bank insist-

-ed on Messrs. Shewan, Tones and Company being placed in possession

of the coal on behalf of the Bank to safeguard their interests and

they also registered their mortgage in the British Consulate in

Canton.

All deliveries of coal have been made by the

Bank through Messrs. Shewan, Tomes and Company against cash pay-

-ments.

The Viceroy having raised the point of owner-

-ship in his despatch dated End. November the Bank have made

particular enquiries and as requested they give the following

facts which they think can be readily proved although then Bank do

not consider they affect their claim.
