Government Hue 36

THEE

Hongkong, 19th.February, 1906.

I have the honour to inform Your

Lordship that in May, 1904, and again in the early part of

1905, applications were received from the Young Men's

Christian Association for the grant of two lots of Crown

Land abutting on Bridges and Rosario Streets in Tai Ping

Shan. The lots, shown in red on accompanying tracing,

each comprises 3,738 Square Feet and were required by the

Association for the erection of recreation rooms and dormi-

-tories for the accommodation of students of Queen's Col-

-lege of whom a certain number belonged to the Association.

The applications were refused in the first instance by Mr.

May, when administering the Government and later by my-

-self as we did not consider that the objects of the As-

-sociation partook so much of a charitable nature as to

justify a grant.

2.

Later, on the 30th. March, 1905,

a further application was received for the refusal of the

two lots for a period of 18 months, the object of this

application

RIGHT HONOURABLE

THE EARL OF ELGIN, K.G.,

800.
