I have the honour to acknowledge

the receipt of Your Lordship's Despatch No. 248 dated 22nd.

December, 1905, asking for my observations en a letter from

Mr. A. W. Grant, Senior Assistant Master at Queen's Col-

-lege, with regard to his leave of absence.

For some time prior to 1887 the

Masters of Queen's College drew on leave only two months

full pay during the months of school vacations.On the 9th.

February of that year Sir William Marsh in his Despatch

No. 31 forwarded a memorial from the Head Master, Dr.G. H.

Bateson Wright, requesting that educational officers in

Hongkong should be allowed two months full pay leave, in

addition to school vacations, after not less than six years

service. This application was granted in Sir Henry Holland's
