With reference to my Despatch
No. 305 dated 29th. December, 1905, in which I informed
Your Lordship that Sir Paul Chater, Kt., C.M.G., had felt
himself compelled not to seek renomination for the Legisla-
-tive Council on which he had represented the Justices of
the Peace since 1888, I have the honour to call attention
to the 7th. paragraph of Mr. Chamberlain's Despatch No.119

dated the 29th. May, 1896, in which it is laid down as
obviously desirable that the Unofficial Members of the
Executive Council should as a rule be chosen from the Un-
-official Members of the Legislative Council, and at the
same time to ask Your Lordship's sanction to my meeting
the wish that Sir Paul Chater has expressed to me that he
should be allowed to retain for the present his seat on
the Executive Council.
