Hon. Colonial Secretary,
IR 21 EB 06
the building to accommodate the Fost
Office, treasury, and other Departments is being constructed
in accordance with plans which were selected from those submit-
-ted in competition, (vide Government Notification No. 743 of
1902). The conditions of competition stipulated that the total
cost of the building, exclusive of Architects' commission, was
not to exceed $500,000.
The Architects, whose design was selected,
(Messrs. Denison, Kam and Gibbs) safeguarded themselves by
stating in their report:- "With regard to the question of cost
"it is believed that the buildings can be built as shown on
"plans for the sum named in the conditions viz.:- $500,000,
"out the extent to which stone could be used and steel con-
"-struction and the better class of wood made use of would have
"to depend in great measure upon the local conditions of build-
"ing orices at the time when tenders are invited".
It was decided by Government that stone
facings should be used as shown on the competition drawings and
that teak should be employed for internal finishings, seeing
that the building is such an important and conspicuous public
one.
the lowest tenders received for the work
have been:-
Foundations. Superstructure.
.$184,000 633.912
$767,912.
As is not unusual, there are considerable
'extras' on the Foundations Contract and all fittings have still
to be provided for so, with the information now available, it
has been considered necessary to increase the estimated cost
to $872,000.
