In reply to the 7th. paragraph of

Mr. Lyttelton's Despatch No. 222 of the 20th. November,

1905, in which the reasons were asked for the very consider

-able increase in the estimate for the New Post Office,

included under Vote 22 (C) of the Colonial Estimates for

1906, I have the honour to enclose the explanation furnish-

-ed by the Director of Public Works.

I have no reason to consider the

cost of the building as now estimated as excessive taking

into consideration its foundation on recently made ground

and the class of materials and finish necessary for the

superstructure of so important and conspicuous an erection.

This cost works out at about 8 d. a cubic foot calculated
