April 26th. 1905.

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letta. dated April 16th in which you enclose a copy of the despatch from the Governor of Rongkong and a copy of a report by Lleut.- colonel Bannerman of the Plague Research Laboratory in Bombay, on the subject of experiments undertaken to discover whether domestic animals are affected by plague and further a request from Mr. Bacratary Lyttleton for my obaervations on the subject.

Lisut.-Colonel Bannerman's report deals with a failure to produce plague artificially in certain animals in Bombay and gives an interesting criticism of the results of the experiments performed in Hongkong more particularly on the illnesses of the pigs.

I have no special observations to make on the Bombay ex- periments further than to remark that the majority of them were not carried out during the plagus season for that city; and that I doubt whether plague bacilli grown in broth and injected Into rats even though they kill such susceptible animals will

be in that state of virulence likely to be productive of plagus
