FOREIGN OFFICE,

September 18th, 1905.

Gentlemen:-

On the receipt of your letter of the 13th

instant, a telegram was addressed to His Majesty's

Minister at Peking informing him that renewed repre-

sentations had been received from the British and

American Tobacco Company, Limited, calling attention

to the reported boycotting of the Company's goods at

Canton, and suggesting that it might be a matter for

unofficial action on the part of Sir E. Satow.

I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne

to inform you that it appears from Sir E. Satow's re-

ply which has just been received that he is not in

possession of sufficiently detailed information to

enable him to take any steps in the matter, but Sir

E. Satow suggests however that the best plan would be

that the Company's Representative at Hongkong should

supply full information on the subject to His Majes-

to the British and American Tobacco Company,

Cecil Chambers,

86, Strand, W.C.
