I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 19th instant enclosing a copy of a letter from the British American Tobacco Company, Limited, with regard to the effect on their business of the Chinese boycott of American goods.

In reply I am to state, for the information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, that Lord Lansdowne has been in communication on the subject with His Majesty's Minister at Pekin and I am to enclose a copy of a telegram from Sir E. Satow together with a copy of a letter which has been addressed by this Department to the British American Tobacco Company relative to the steps which they should take in the matter.
