HIS BRITANNIC MAJESTY'S CONSULATE GENERAL
CANTO N.
April 16th, 1905.
Sir:-
I have the honour to report that on my arrival
at Canton I requested His Majesty's Consul General,
Mr. Scott, to inform the Viceroy that I was there and
that I would like to pay my respects to His Excellen-
cy.
Ten o'clock this morning was the time fixed for
my audience and shortly after nine Mr. Scott and I
proceeded in the customary official chairs to the
Yamen. The Viceroy most politely sent a guard of
honour which formed up on the bridge connecting
Shameen with the mainland and presented arms as I
passed on my outward and homeward journeys. Mr.
Scott informs me that as far as he knows this is the
first occasion such a mark of courtesy has been
shown and it may be taken as evidence of the Vice-
roy's wish to be friendly.
Sir E.Satow, G.C.M.Ġ.
