SECTION 1.

No. 1.

India Office to Foreign Office.--(Received June 19.)

India Office, June 16, 1905.

WITH reference to the telegram from the Viceroy of the 13th instant, reporting that Shih Taotai, who accompanied Consul Latton on his recent survey of the Northern Burmal--Yuunan frontier, is to be transferred immediately to Puerh, I am directed by Mr. Secretary Brodrick to request that you will inform the Marquess of Lansdowne that it is, in his opinion, very undesirable that that official should be withdrawn before a settlement of the frontier in the region of the N'Maikha has been arrived at.

I am therefore to say that Mr. Brodrick indorses the recommendation of the Government of India, that a protest should be made to the Chinese Government against Shih Taotai's removal at the present time.

I am, &c.

(Signed)

A. GODLEY,
