Question asked in the House of Commons, May 18.

Colonel Denny,-To ask the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the prevalence of piracy in the Canton delta and along the coast of China; whether he has received during last year any account of organized attacks on British vessels; and what action the British Government is taking towards the suppression of these pirates.

Answer.

The attention of His Majesty's Government has recently been called to a number of piratical attacks on vessels on the Canton River (some of them being British-owned), His Majesty's Consul-General at Canton has made a representation to the Viceroy on the subject, and His Majesty's Government are in communication with His Majesty's Minister at Peking regarding these attacks.
