With reference to your letéer 11000 of the 7th inst-
-ant frelative
ant relative to the reported intention of the Americans
to secure a deep water port near Whampoa as a terminus for
the Hankow-Canton Railway, I am directed by the Marquess of
Lansdome to transmit to you, to be laid before the Secretary
of State for the Colonies, copies of telegraphic correspond-
-ence which has passed with His Majesty's Minister at Pek-
-ing on the subject.
I am to say that Lord Lansdowne would be glad to be
Favoured with any observations which Mr Secretary Lyttelton
May have to maje on Sir E.Satow's telegram.
