THE Under-Secretary of State for India presents his compliments to the Under- Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, and, by direction of Mr. Secretary Brodrick, forwards herewith, for the information of the Secretary of State, copy of inclosures in a letter from the Foreign Secretary, Calcutta, dated 23rd March, relative to Burmah- China frontier affairs.

Rangoon, February 20, 1905.

"Taotai wanted to take 100 meu, and reduced to forty after persuasion from me.

I think it is not necessary you should send as many as forty sepoys. Your surveyors will be more numerous than theirs. I think you should send some

Kachins.

"We should stop work about the 1st June if we can begin before the 1st March,” Lieutenant-Governor is sending forty military police, thinking it well to equal Chinese. Arrangements to include four or five Kachin military police in the escort will be made.
