I AM directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 5th instant, relative to railway communication between Burmali and the Province of Yunnan.

With reference to paragraph 4 of your letter, I am to say that the Secretary of State for India rightly understands Lord Lansdowne to say that no expenditure from Imperial funds nor any Imperial guarantees are contemplated in connection with a railway from Kanlong, on the frontier of Burmah, througli Tali to Yüunan-fu.
