HINA TRADE.

[ December 17.]

ONFIDENTIAL.

No. 1.

SECTION 4.

1

Manchester Chamber of Commerce to the Marquess of Lansdowne.--(Received December 17.)

Ir Lord,

Manchester, December 16, 1904. ASKING your reference to the letter from this Chamber of the 12th November, d the reply sent by your direction on the 17th November, on the subject of the otection of trade-marks in China-for which I am to thank your Lordship-I am esired by the Board of Directors of this Chamber again to address you. From a mmunication made to the Manchester papers of the 14th instant, by an apparently ell-informed correspondent, it would appear that the operation of the Trade-marks Provisional Regulations has not been suspended, and that the offices for the

gistration of marks in China are open.

Relying upon the efficacy of the representations made to the Chinese Government Ilis Majesty's Government, the mercantile community interested have not far-speaking in general terms--sought to protect their rights under the new gime. The information published in the newspapers has caused them much xiety, and I am instructed to ask that your Lordship would be so good as to reet the dispatch of a cable telegram to Sir E. M. Satow, asking him if this atement is correct, and, if so, instructing him to press upon the Chinese authorities e necessity for suspending, for at least six months, the provisional Regulations, nd also for the publication forthwith of an official announcement on the subject.

I have, &c. (Signed) WALTER SPEAKMAN,

Secretary.
