from the date of his leaving London for Hong Kong and (sub-
ject to the provisions of Clause 8) shall continue for six
months certain from that time and for such longer period
thereafter as the Consulting Engineers may think necessary
to complete the reconnaissance surveys and the detailed sur ---
vey hereinbefore mentioned. The Consulting Engineers re- serve to themselves the right to terminate the engagement by giving two calendar months notice to the Assistant either by
telegram or letter such notice to take effect at any time
after the expiration of six months from the date of appoint-
ment of the Assistant.
4th. The duties of the Assistant shall be to perform with all due diligence the duties of Assistant Surveying
Engineer in connection with the reconnaissance and detailed
surveys before mentioned and with those of any other railways
or branches or other alternative routes which he may be in-
structed to undertake by the Consulting Engineers or by the Engineer and in obtaining such information and preparing
such drawings and estimates in accordance with the instruc-
tions to be given to him by the Consulting Engineers or by the Engineer as they or he may deem necessary to enable the results of the reconnaissance surveys to be placed before the Governor of Hong Kong by the Engineer in such a manner that the selection of the route to be adopted may be made also as and when instructed by the Consulting Engineers or by the Engineer to assist in the preparation of the detailed loca- tion survey of the selected route and in obtaining all such further information and in preparing such further plans draw- ings and estimates as may be necessary to enable the Consult- ing Engineers to report fully to the Crown Agents for the Colonies and generally to perform all engineering duties in connection with the matter which the Consulting Engineers
