One thousand nine hundred and five
BETWEEN SIR JOHN WOLFE BARRY AND PARTNERS, Civil
Engineers, the Consulting Engineers for the British Section
of the Kowloon Canton Railway (hereinafter called the
→
"Consulting Engineers") of the one part and FRANCIS WILLIAM
WOODLEY VALPY of 7 Effingham Crescent, Dover, Civil Engineer
(hereinafter called "the Assistant") of the other part
WHEREAS the Consulting Engineers have received
instructions from the Crown Agents for the Colonies to carry
out reconnaissance surveys of alternative routes for a line
of railway in British Territory which is intended hereafter
to form part of a railway from Kowloon to Canton and subse-
quently to make detailed location surveys of the route se-
lected and to report thereon together with detailed plans and
estimates and have appointed Mr. John Cecil Bruce (who and
any other Engineer appointed in his place by the Consulting
Engineers is hereinafter called the Engineer) as their
principal Surveying Engineer in connection with the matter.
NOV IT IS AGREED as follows :-
1st. The Consulting Engineers hereby engage the Assis-
tant to serve as Assistant Surveying Engineer upon and in
connection with the aforesaid surveys and report, upon and
subject to the terms hereinafter mentioned and appearing and
the Assistant hereby accepts the said engagement.
2nd.
The Assistant shall proceed direct to Hong Kong
by the Peninsular and Oriental Steamship Company's steamer
leaving London on Twelfth May One thousand nine hundred and
five (being provided with a first class return passage there- to from London) and shall return to London immediately on
the conclusion of his duties in the Colony of Hong Kong under
this Agreement.
3rd.
