BETWEEN
SIR JOHN WOLFE BARRY AND PARTNERS Civil Engineers the Consult - ing Engineers for the British Section of the Kowloon-Canton Railway (hereinafter called the "Consulting Engineers") of
the one part and JOHN CECIL BRUCE of 10 Cathcart Road South
Kensington London Civil Engineer (hereinafter called "the En- gineer") of the other part
WHEREAS the Consulting Engineers have received instruc-
tions from the Crown Agents for the Colonies to carry out re- connaissance surveys of alternative routes for a line of rail-
way in British Territory which is intended hereafter to form
part of a railway from Kowloon to Canton and subsequently to
make detailed location surveys of the route selected and to
report thereon together with detailed plans and estimates.
NOW IT IS AGREED AS FOLLOWS:-
1st. The Consulting Engineers hereby engage the Engineer
to serve as Chief Surveying Engineer upon and in connection with the aforesaid surveys and report upon and subject to the terms hereinafter mentioned and appearing and the Engineer hereby accepts the said engagement.
2nd. The Engineer shall proceed direct to Hong Kong by the Peninsular and Oriental Steamship Company's steamer leav- ing London on twelfth day of May One thousand nine hundred
and five (being provided with a first class return passage thereto from London) and shall return to London immediately
on the conclusion of his duties in the Colony of Hong Kong under this Agreement
3rd. The engagement of the Engineer shall commence from the date of his leaving London for Hong Kong and (subject to
the provisions of Clause 9) shall continue for six months
certain from that time and for such longer period thereafter
as the Consulting Engineers may think necessary to complete
