It has therefore become both

advisable and necessary that some increase should be grant-
-ed, and I have now to forward for your approval a scheme
for recasting and bringing into line the salaries of both
the Overseers and the Sanitary Inspectors which will,
hope, obviate further discontent.
4.
I
As you are aware the present ar-
-rangement of salaries is as follows:-
Sanitary Inspectors 1st.Class £250-£270 by annual incre-
-ments of £5.
do. do.
2nd.Class £200-£230 3rd.Class £170-£215
do. - do. -
Overseers 1st.Class £210-£250 by triennial increments of
£20. - do.
do. -2nd.Class £160-£200
It will be noticed that the maximum salary of the 3rd.
Class of the Sanitary Staff is £15 in excess of the minimum
salary of the 2nd. Class, and that therefore an Officer on
the maximum salary of the 3rd. Class must be given at least
three increments upon promotion which practically reduces
the 2nd. Class to the small range of £215 or £220
and makes its retention of little advantage.
5.
£230,
I propose to abolish this class
in the Sanitary Staff and in future to have two classes
only for both Departments at similar rates of pay, namely:-
Lakhalist}
Class I £240-£270 by triennial increments of £15. Class II £165-2225
