I have the honour to inform you

that considerable dissatisfaction exists among the Over-

-seers of the Public Works Department with regard to their

present emoluments, which compare, as they point out, some-

-what unfavourably with the salaries of the Inspectors on

the Sanitary Staff, who are in the majority of cases men of

similar standing with themselves and whose technical quali-

-fications are certainly not superior to theirs.

The difficulty experienced by the

Crown Agents in engaging suitable persons for the Overseers'

posts in the higher class at the existing rates of salary

was pointed out in Mr. Chamberlain's Despatch No. 173 of

the 17th. June, 1902, from which it would appear that these

rates are not sufficient to tempt qualified men to come out

to the Colony.
