CONFIDEN T

sir,

Government House,
Hongkong, 27th. July, 1905.
My attention has recently been
called to the comparatively small extent to which the
agency of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation has
of late been utilised by the Crown Agents for their drafts
on this Colony and to the use that has been made of two
foreign institutions, viz.:- the Russo-Chinese Bank and
the International Banking Corporation and Guaranty Trust
Company of New York.
2.
I annex a statement showing the
sums drawn through the various banking institutions in the
Colony in the year 1904 and the first 6 months of 1905. It
shows also that these drafts were principally necessary
to meet payments for the subsidiary coinage imported into
the Colony.
3.
In connection with this coinage I
have
HE RIGHT HONOURABLE
ALFRED LYTTELTON, K.C., M.P.,
