No. 143.

Hongkong.

sir,

Goverment House,

3 JUL 05

Hongkong, 1st June,

526

1905.

I have the honour to bring to your

notice some alterations that have been made by this Govern-

-ment in respect of the tenure of certain lands at Mong

Kok Tsui Village in Kowloon, which do not appear to have

been previously reported to you.

2.

In 1897 the Squatters Board con-

-sidered the claims of the inhabitants of the above mention

-ed village and on their recommendation leases for terms

varying from one to twenty-one years were granted. The

neighbourhood rapidly developed and in 1899 it was con-

-sidered advisable to lay out the site of the old village

in new roads and lots. This necessitated large reclamations

before the lots could be utilized and as the owners could

not be expected to incur the expenditure involved unless

longer tenures were granted them, they were offered leases

for 75 years, renewable on the usual terms, on payment of

premium

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

ALFRED LYTTELTON, K.C., M.P.,
