With reference to Mr. May's Des-
-patch No. 143 of the 31st. of March, 1904, I have the
honour to transmit for your information six copies of the
Report of the Acting Director of Public Works for the
year 1904.
2.
The total expenditure on Public
Works Department, Recurrent and Extraordinary) was 31.5
of the total expenditure of the Colony for the year. The
corresponding percentage in 1903 was 25.4. According to
Estimates it will be 34.3 in 1905. A steady increase in
the proportion of the annual revenue expended on Public
Works cannot but be regarded as satisfactory.
3.
The proportion of the expenditure
on the Department to the combined expenditure on Recurrent
May
and Extraordinary Works only approximately represents the
establishment charges for these works. On the one hand
