With reference to Mr. May's Des-

-patch No. 143 of the 31st. of March, 1904, I have the

honour to transmit for your information six copies of the

Report of the Acting Director of Public Works for the

year 1904.

The total expenditure on Public

Works Department, Recurrent and Extraordinary) was 31.5

of the total expenditure of the Colony for the year. The

corresponding percentage in 1903 was 25.4. According to

Estimates it will be 34.3 in 1905. A steady increase in

the proportion of the annual revenue expended on Public

Works cannot but be regarded as satisfactory.

The proportion of the expenditure

on the Department to the combined expenditure on Recurrent

May

and Extraordinary Works only approximately represents the

establishment charges for these works. On the one hand
