With reference to Mr. May's Des-

-patch No. 261 of the 17th. of June, 1904, I have the

honour to transmit for your information six copies of the

Report of the Superintendent of the Botanical and Affores-

o copies ber Book

Post)

-tation Department for the year 1904.

2.

The scheme for felling and re-

-planting Pine forests on the block system with a 25 years'

rotation as set forth in the Superintendent's Report for

1903 was initiated. It elicited much adverse comment from

the public and has also been criticised by Mr. C. Ford

formerly Superintendent of the Department who has contended

that a 50 years' rotation would be preferable. I have

therefore suspended further felling pending the result of a

communication which I have addressed to the Indian Govern -

-ment asking for their advice in the matter. A revenue of

$18,000
